Project Description: Commonwealth Engineers & Consultants, Inc. developed 3R improvement plans for 1.0 miles of principal and minor arterial roadways. The project is located within several historic districts and includes geometric roadway design, drainage and intersection signal improvements. CE&C also developed the design of a boat ramp facility in coordination with the Rhode Department of Environmental Management - Planning and Development. The project also included extensive environmental coordination in both the states of Rhode Island and Connecticut. Flood plain, freshwater wetlands and Coastal Resources Management Council permits were also obtained. In addition to the roadway improvements, a feasibility report was developed which investigated additional bridge crossings of the Pawcatuck River. The rehabilitation of the Westerly Train Station into an intermodal transportation facility was also included in the scope of this project. |
The Pawcatuck River feasibility report included an extensive traffic counting program and research to determine the best possible location of an additional crossing to relieve traffic congestion within the downtown Westerly business district. The improvements to the Westerly Train Station included architectural, structural and site improvements in coordination with Amtrak for the future use of the station as a commuter rail station. |
